Brief Guide to Marriage Registration in Nepal

Marriage between two consenting adults is recognized as an inviolable social bond and registration of marriage is facilitated by federal laws and regulations applicable throughout Nepal. Married persons must register marriages to obtain legal status and various facilities related to marital status.

Ways to register marriage in Nepal:

  • Obtaining permission prior to marriage followed by registration thereof
  • Obtaining registration after marriage is conducted as per cultural norms
  • Obtaining registration of marriage previously registered in a foreign country
  • Obtaining registration based on court order

Federal Laws governing marriage in Nepal:

  • Marriage Registration Act 2028 (1971),
  • Marriage Registration Rules, 2028 (1971),
  • Country Civil Code 2074 (2017).

Marriage Registration Authority in Nepal:  Municipal Authority where either person has maintained residence for a period of at least 15 days prior to the marriage

Eligibility Criteria for marriage in Nepal:

  • both persons being unmarried
  • both persons having completed 20 years of age
  • marriage not otherwise prohibited under prevailing law (e.g. by reason of being incestuous or misrepresentation of material facts)

Documents and Requirements for marriage in Nepal (as per applicability)  

  • Online registration at web platform of Department of National ID and Civil Registration
  • Applications and notifications as specified under Marriage Registration Rules  
  • Three witnesses to the marriage  
  • Documents certifying nationality of both persons
  • Two Recently taken auto size photographs of both persons
  • Certified Power of Attorney certified by a Nepalese mission aboard (if one of the persons is outside of Nepal)
  • Court decision proving marriage (in case of dispute)
  • Evidence of marriage registration in a foreign country certified by consular service department or foreign mission located in Nepal or Nepalese mission located abroad
